This Fashion Sewing Fundamentals course is designed to build sewing independence through a clear understanding of garment construction, sewing patterns, and the relationship between fabrics, tools, and techniques. This accelerated 6-week course combines live instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises to help students confidently complete garments using commercial sewing patterns.

Through this course, students develop sewing literacy: learning not only how techniques are executed, but why construction methods matter and how fabrics, tools, and patterns work together throughout the sewing process. This understanding builds confidence in making decisions and solving common sewing challenges as they arise. Guided instruction and private group support help students ask questions, build technical understanding, and develop greater independence in their sewing practice.

This course is designed to teach you not only what to do, but what you don’t yet know you need to know.

Class Orientation

Each live class follows a consistent, supportive structure designed to help you build skills through guided practice and repetition.

We begin with a group discussion where students share their weekly practice experience—what felt challenging, what went well, and any questions that came up while working.

From there, we move into a focused lesson using a slide presentation or video to introduce the day’s topic. In some sessions, we work through guided worksheets together to reinforce key concepts and techniques in real time.

Next, you’ll see live demonstrations of sewing techniques or tools, where each step is shown clearly and broken down so you can follow along with confidence.

At the end of class, we will go over the guided practice assignment for the week. These exercises are designed to reinforce what you’ve learned previously, and may include activities like fabric exploration, layout planning, or class sewing projects. These are not required, but they strengthen the problem-solving skills essential to sewing independence.

Instructor

This course is taught by Laura Nash, a professional sewing educator with over 16 years of experience teaching at sewing expos thoughout the USA, and at American Sewing Guild (ASG) chapters and conferences. She worked as a special collections designer for Simplicity, written for Threads Magazine, and is a Craftsy instructor.

Her teaching approach focuses on structured skill-building, problem-solving, and helping students gain real sewing independence with fit, design, and garment construction.

Course Description

You will build a strong foundation in sewing through structured, progressive instruction.

Throughout this 6-week sewing course, you will learn every fundamental from operating and solving sewing machine issues, to understand fabrics, tools, and notions, and develop essential garment sewing techniques. You will also learn how to confidently select, read, understand, and use commercial sewing patterns.

By the end of the course, you will be able to complete skill-appropriate sewing projects independently from start to finish, using problem-solving skills rather than step-by-step tutorials.

A personalized sample notebook is recommended for organizing techniques and reference materials.

• Live Instruction: Tuesdays, 1:00–3:00 PM Pacific Time
• Format: Hybrid, live online beginner sewing course

This is an active, hands-on learning course. Students should expect to complete weekly assignments between classes to reinforce skills and build confidence.
