The Fifth Avenue Cocktail Dress sewing pattern blends vintage inspired style with a modern cocktail sheath silhouette with a portrait collar and side bustle. Ideal for the advanced sewists building tailored garments.

Step out in this smart and fashionable cocktail dress that is 100% designer stylishness!  Recommended for those with advanced sewing skills, this fitted asymmetrical dress features a pleated collar that dramatically wraps around a modified sweetheart neck to beautifully frame your face.  A skirt drape pleated to one side ends in a tufted ruffle that offers design interest and visual balance. The lined bodice has princess seams with a separate midriff yoke and short set-in sleeves. The below knee pencil skirt has a back kick pleat with side zipper closure. Add sequined and beaded or plain appliqués at right side bodice and skirt drape, or leave it plain as you desire.

For a truly one-of-a-kind finish, add a designer touch to your sash or neckline with a Venise Lace Applique Set.

For a collar that holds its structure and stands up, use crisp formal fabrics from nylon acetate, or silk, such as taffeta, dupioni, or satin or linen. For a collar that drapes softly, try fabrics such as sateen, crepe, georgette, challis, peachskin, and many suitings. Not suitable for plaids, stripes, or fabrics that need matching.

How Our Sizing Works

All of our patterns are multi‑sized, and every size is included in each pattern. We use a measurement‑based sizing system similar to bridalwear, so your usual retail size or standard pattern size may not correspond to our chart. Select your size using your body measurements, choosing the closest match for each area. You can achieve an excellent fit by customizing your size across the three main measurement points.

Misses Fit

Our misses block is drafted for a true hourglass figure with broader shoulders, a full B‑cup bust, a long waist, and a height of 5’7″. Fitted styles generally include:

  • 3″ full‑bust ease
  • 0–1″ waist ease
  • 2″ hip ease

Additional design ease may be added depending on the style. To understand the finished garment fit, refer to the body measurements in the chart and add the ease amounts listed above.

Plus Fit

Our plus block is drafted for a different distribution of curves than the misses block, with narrower shoulders, a fuller waist and hip, a slightly shorter waist length, and a height of 5’7″. Plus patterns include cup sizes from C–F, which vary by style. Fitted styles include:

  • 2.5″ full‑bust ease (to support a smooth fit on a fuller bust)
  • 1″ waist ease
  • 4″ hip ease

Additional design ease may be added depending on the style. To understand the finished garment fit, refer to the body measurements in the chart and add the ease amounts listed above.

    I made this dress for a formal event and got so many compliments! It wasn’t an easy sew, but it was well worth the effort. If I make this again I will use a more structured fabric. Fabric can make or break an outfit. Even with my mistakes it still turned out AMAZING. Laura Nash, the designer, is really friendly and approachable. If you ever get stick on a step she is there to help. I’m so happy I found this wonderful sewing company. Beautiful patterns and a kind designer.
